Experiences:
Making the difference in transitions
The world is becoming increasingly interconnected through the growth of transportation, both for people and goods. However, this brings significant sustainability challenges. Different modes of transport, such as aviation, maritime, and land transport, are increasingly influencing each other, making the transition challenges within the sector often comparable.
To succeed in this dynamic environment, new propositions, products, operating models, technologies, and innovations are essential. Through three services, we create successful sustainable growth.

Schiphol Airport faces significant challenges in baggage handling. Airline baggage handlers frequently experience physical strain and injury from lifting heavy luggage. The Dutch Labor Inspectorate is enforcing compliance with labor laws more strictly to protect baggage employees. Additionally, the labor market is facing unprecedented staff shortages, and the capacity of the baggage system is reaching its limits due to the emergence of larger aircraft and fleet renewal.
Solving global baggage problems at Schiphol Airport
To ensure and accelerate the pace of necessary innovation and implementation, we have established a collaboration program for airports worldwide, called BOOST. Currently, we are in discussions with 15 airports and airlines to join forces within this coalition for baggage automation.
“Our ultimate goal is to reduce physical strain and improve working conditions for baggage employees. With BOOST, we can work faster and collectively on smart solutions for this. Information and insights are structurally shared with the other core partners, allowing everyone to benefit from multiple tests without having to perform them independently."
Dennis van Kleef - Program Lead Baggage, Royal Schiphol Group
To become the world’s most sustainable and high-quality airport group, Schiphol is working towards the following goals: increasing the quality of work, service, network and living environment. To achieve these ambitions, Schiphol Group is investing heavily in innovation. Schiphol has chosen nlmtd and TNW as their long-term innovation partners.
Orchestrating an innovation ecosystem
Our specialists assist by determining the optimal way to implement and manage innovation within the organisation. From the role of an ‘orchestrator’, we engage a network of relevant parties, co-creating Schiphol’s innovation objectives, and maintaining a harmony between people, planet, and profit.
"We need innovation to achieve our ambition. For example, we foresee that by 2050, daily operations on the Schiphol platform will have changed significantly. Activities on the ground such as baggage transport, passenger transport and aircraft towing will not only be clean, but also smart and autonomous. We are well on our way in this area with TNW (The Next Web) and nltmd and look forward to the future."
