Director
Pierre helps leaders and teams in healthcare and the public sector navigate complex change. He combines expertise in health systems, governance and evaluation with an open, collaborative leadership style. More than sixteen years of international experience have taught him to understand different perspectives and interests and help people find a shared direction. His work spans redesigning health services, developing strategies to scale digital mental healthcare and evaluating policies and programmes. He leads multidisciplinary teams and brings together the people and expertise needed to move a challenge forward. He connects evidence with strategic decisions and the realities of implementation. At nlmtd, he brings this international perspective to help organisations make clear choices and take shared responsibility for next steps.
My talent
I connect easily with people and am curious about what matters to them. I listen closely, ask questions and make room for difficult conversations. That helps me identify shared interests and what is getting in the way of working together. I can go deep into the evidence, bring structure and clarify the decisions needed. As a team leader, I give direction while making space for others’ expertise. I use my network to bring the right people together, offer candid advice and stay involved in the agreed next steps.
My education
DrPH Global Health — George Washington University, Washington, DC (2016)
MSc Development and Rural Innovation — Wageningen University (2010)
MSc Biology — University of Groningen (2008)
BSc Biology — University of Groningen (2006)
People and organizations that inspire me
Harish Hande of SELCO, Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank and Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind each inspire me in different ways. Harish, whom I’ve met, shows how access to sustainable energy can open up new opportunities for people. He and Yunus reflect my belief that innovation should create lasting improvements in people’s lives, especially where opportunities are limited. What particularly draws me to Hassabis is how he creatively brings together knowledge from different disciplines to tackle major scientific and societal challenges. I’m fascinated by leaders who look beyond their own fields, make unexpected connections and bring people together to turn new possibilities into reality.
What I like to do in my spare time
I make electronic dance music with two friends as Tending Tropic. I love turning sounds, ideas and shared energy into something of our own. I also enjoy cooking with and for family and friends.
