Working at nlmtd as a Consultant in the Energy Transition

Thomas has now been part of nlmtd’s energy team for nearly a year. He graduated from TU Delft a little over 18 months ago, where he developed a passion for innovative solutions such as hydrogen technology, circularity, renewable fuels, carbon capture, and electrification. At nlmtd, he is turning this passion into tangible impact.

Getting to Know nlmtd

Thomas fondly remembers how he got introduced to the company: “From the very first conversation, I felt the positive and entrepreneurial energy. Everyone at nlmtd is social and proactive, fostering a culture of doers. Whether it’s work-related or social activities, there’s always something happening, such as barbecues, weekend trips, the annual ski trip, and many Friday afternoon drinks with fun activities.”

The flexibility within nlmtd also stands out to him. Based on your interests and opportunities, the company works with you to find projects that suit you best. This approach supports a great work-life balance while offering a variety of project types and development opportunities. “I appreciate the freedom to bring diversity to the types of projects, their durations, and the developmental possibilities,” he says. In addition to his project work, Thomas actively contributes to nlmtd’s growth through initiatives like marketing activities.

Making an Impact in the Energy Transition

The energy transition is a major driver for Thomas, and he finds it rewarding to contribute to this cause in a meaningful way. “The energy transition is one of the most pressing topics today, and its relevance will only grow. Gaining knowledge in this field is incredibly valuable. At nlmtd, I also have the chance to collaborate daily with experts and experienced professionals, which offers amazing opportunities for personal growth.”

Nearly all leading companies in the Netherlands involved in the energy transition, such as Alliander, Enexis, TenneT, Vattenfall, Gasunie, and Netbeheer Nederland, are nlmtd clients. Thomas reflects, “This not only provides opportunities but also valuable insights. What I particularly enjoy is learning from other projects. Colleagues frequently present their work, which is not only fascinating but also creates opportunities to discuss how they tackled specific challenges.”

Moreover, nlmtd organizes internal training sessions and fun & learn activities to foster personal and professional development. Examples include a workshop on hydrogen or a visit to a high-voltage station, experiences that inspire and contribute to continuous growth.

Preparing Gasunie for New Forms of Energy

Thomas is currently assisting Gasunie in its transition toward a sustainable energy infrastructure. “Our approach is twofold,” he explains. “Gasunie focuses on enabling the transport and storage of hydrogen, heat, and CO2. On one hand, we help set up a team to effectively and successfully integrate these new energy services. On the other hand, we support individual projects by preparing systems, processes, and people to ensure these projects can become operational.” More details about nlmtd’s approach can be found in an earlier article.

In practical terms, this means that no two days are the same for Thomas at the Porthos project. Some days he focuses on structuring complex challenges, while others he works on visualizing the status and progress of various elements. This requires extensive coordination among all stakeholders. He notes, “My main contribution is translating complex or large amounts of information into something that is manageable, clear, and useful.” Additionally, the energy transition demands new systems and ways of working. To support this, Thomas develops training programs and learning tools and delivers presentations to introduce these innovations.
