Electric flying for short distances is already a reality. But getting from occasional flights to a nationwide -and international- network requires more. To that end, nlmtd and NRG2fly are joining forces.

This summer, NRG2fly won the first Transition Award, an initiative of Change.Inc and nlmtd. Change Inc in response, wrote great articles on the concept and the ambition, and also a detailed article on the opportunities for the future. Last week was the collaboration between NRG2fly and nlmtd official during LiT Aero Conference fromAviation in Transition. During this event signed we an agreement for A long-term partnership, with the goal of: build together to infrastructure and ecosystems who fly electric and the electrification of aviation accelerate.

More than just charging stations

NRG2fly is developing the first nationwide charging network for electric aircraft in the Netherlands. At Lelystad Airport – part of Schiphol Group – this is already a reality. Concrete energy hubs at airports where planes with a plug can recharge. A test facility has been built at Teuge Airport to demonstrate how an energy network including charging infrastructure works. The infrastructure is growing.

The Netherlands is already a leader in charging infrastructure for electric driving. We are now repeating that trick – but in the air. Together with nlmtd, we can position the Netherlands as a leader in electric flying” – Merlijn van Vliet of NRG2fly. And let’s face it: it’s badly needed. Electric flying requires more than putting up a few charging stations. The whole (eco)system needs to go along: regulation, energy access, energy management, business models and clear roles for all stakeholders.

Building the transition together

Both parties are going hard at co-creation: directing innovation by working with governments, airports, aircraft manufacturers and energy companies. The plans? Active knowledge exchange, joint projects, involving all relevant players. We aim to mobilize a network of 10 to 20 progressive regional airports to jointly take a first step in vision and realization. Based on the results from that, we can expand further in circles around the Netherlands.

The collaboration shows that we are serious about sustainable aviation. The transition to electric flight is not a question of if, but when. The air is getting greener, and it starts here.
