During the “Create the Future” event, TenneT initiated an important discussion on how to accelerate the energy transition amid increasing capacity pressures. It quickly became clear that collaboration and decisive action are essential for progress. This is why TenneT is calling for a “Coalition of the Willing.”
The limit has been reached
The energy transition is progressing rapidly, but our electricity grid is struggling to keep pace. In the Netherlands, we tend to follow a nearly risk-free approach; however, other parts of the world demonstrate different methods. For instance, in California, energy can sometimes be almost free due to the innovative use of technology. Instead of waiting until everything is 100% certain, they embrace experimentation and scale successful solutions.
In the Netherlands, the daily balancing of supply and demand (redispatch) currently incurs a cost of approximately half a million euros per day. This serves as a costly reminder that the existing system is struggling to meet its goals. It’s time to take conscious risks, as doing nothing is no longer a viable option.

Less talk, more action
We have sufficient knowledge at this point, and true collaboration starts when we take action. With this in mind, TenneT, in partnership with nlmtd, investigated both the Dutch and international tech ecosystems. This was not just a theoretical exercise; rather, it served as a concrete foundation for action.
The question is: which existing technologies can we deploy now to utilize our grid more smartly?
Out of more than a hundred tech companies, we selected eight promising candidates and immediately began collaborating with three of them. The key to this transition lies not in a single groundbreaking solution, but in the combination of various technologies. By connecting these parties and sharing data, we are creating a dynamic system that drives continuous improvement. This collaboration has fostered an ecosystem of innovation that aims to connect customers to the grid more efficiently.
Accelerating regionally through smart collaboration

The next step is to collaborate with regional grid operators to find more efficient ways to connect customers. We recognize opportunities to make a meaningful impact in this area. This involves exploring smart contract options, developing tailored solutions, and leveraging local initiatives.
This step requires more than just technical innovation; it demands a new way of thinking and collaborating, daring to let go of standard solutions and trusting in shared goals.
What do involved organizations say?
The urgency and ambition to utilize the power grid more efficiently are widely recognized, not only at TenneT but also among companies that frequently deal with grid congestion. While there are numerous innovations, particularly behind the meter, Ahold Delhaize indicates that too little is being done to implement them. Concurrently, TenneT identifies a potential for improvement of 30 to 40% before the meter. Many companies are eager to contribute ideas and assist, but they are uncertain about how to do so. For instance, Heijmans inquired about the types of solutions that could fall under this category, such as Thermal Scoping applications. Unica correctly highlighted the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), asking how we can ensure their participation in this process.
A dynamic and productive discussion occurred among the participants, highlighting the abundance of knowledge, ideas, and a shared eagerness to progress together.
Accelerate together: will you join?
The message is clear: solutions exist, technology is available, and the will to change is present. What we need now is action! Collaboration at the right levels —regional, practical, and goal-oriented —is essential.
Let’s seize the momentum! Join the Coalition of the Willing and help us build a future-proof energy system, because the future won’t wait, and we can make a difference now.
