style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">Sandra Kaspers is CFO at EDSN, an organization that plays a vital behind\u2011the\u2011scenes role in the Dutch energy system. Among other things, the company manages data from smart meters and ensures that energy suppliers and grid operators receive the right insights. \u201cWe\u2019re really under the hood,\u201d she says. \u201cAlmost no one knows us, but everyone depends on us.\u201d<\/span><\/p><div><div class=\"paragraph-in-scc-markdown-text ___1ngh792 ftgm304 f1iaxwol\">Two years ago, during a trip to Canada, Sandra Kaspers witnessed something that has stayed with her ever since. It was her third visit to the same glacier. The first time, she was seventeen. Now, more than thirty years later, the landscape had visibly changed. \u201cIt was really shocking to see how far that glacier had retreated,\u201d she says. \u201cThat same summer, we drove through areas where we were literally surrounded by brown smog from wildfires. CSRD, ESG, dual materiality analyses were all on the agenda. But the longer she worked on it, the more uncomfortable it felt.<\/span><\/p><div><div class=\"paragraph-in-scc-markdown-text ___1ngh792 ftgm304 f1iaxwol\">\u201cBefore you know it, it turns into some kind of reporting extravaganza. Or rather, a chore, even though that\u2019s obviously not the point.\u201d Because sustainability, she believes, should not be about ticking boxes. It should be about the role your organization plays and the impact it makes.<br \/><br \/><\/div><div class=\"paragraph-in-scc-markdown-text ___1ngh792 ftgm304 f1iaxwol\">At the same time, she noticed something else. Young employees were joining EDSN precisely because of its contribution to the energy transition, yet they saw little evidence of that in practice. \u201cThat\u2019s when I thought: something is going on here. Instead of starting with strategy, targets, or reports, they began with people.<br \/><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">What motivates you? What concerns you? What do you want to contribute<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">According to Jeroen from nlmtd, that is precisely where the strength lies. \u201cIf you approach it purely from a strategic perspective, it stays in your head. We wanted it to come from an emotional place and connect it to business objectives from there.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">The approach proved effective. During several sessions, it became clear that nearly everyone on the management team felt a personal connection to the topic; it was just that no one had spoken up before. \u201cThat was a real eye opener for me,\u201d says Sandra. \u201cI wasn\u2019t the only one at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">Building on those personal motivations, the team then moved on to the Sustainable Development Goals and, ultimately, to the question: where can we, as an organization, truly make an impact?<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b37145 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"5b37145\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7a2828 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d7a2828\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong> (SDGs) are 17 global goals set by the United Nations to end poverty, inequality, and climate change by 2030. They serve as the international roadmap for a fair, sustainable, and inclusive world. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c80025d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c80025d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">If You Don\u2019t Appreciate the Little Things\u2026<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ced64f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ced64f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">The result was not a grand, sweeping plan or an all-encompassing strategy, but something else: a set of concrete, achievable initiatives. And perhaps even more importantly, a different way of looking at things. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to turn everything upside down right away,\u201d says Sandra. \u201cYou can also ask: how can we integrate this into what we\u2019re already doing?\u201d<\/span><\/p><div><div class=\"paragraph-in-scc-markdown-text ___1ngh792 ftgm304 f1iaxwol\">At EDSN, this led to a more active Green Team, a Green IT workshop for developers, increased focus on energy consumption and catering, and the decision to switch all company cars to electric. Work is also underway on a new CO\u2082 report to improve insight and awareness. As Sandra puts it, these are \u201clots of little things.\u201d Yet ultimately, they do make a difference.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bec8c6a elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"bec8c6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48bee48 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"48bee48\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">No Big Bang, but Forward Momentum<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d7255e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d7255e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">It still doesn\u2019t feel like a classic success story to her. Implementation is proving difficult. Other priorities take over. Initiatives lose momentum. Some topics, such as the social side of sustainability, still need an extra push. \u201cIt really is a puzzle,\u201d she says honestly. \u201cAnd there\u2019s no tailwind right now, so you have to do it because you truly want to.\u201d<\/span><\/p><div><div class=\"paragraph-in-scc-markdown-text ___1ngh792 ftgm304 f1iaxwol\">Perhaps that is exactly where the value lies. Because in the meantime, things are definitely happening. The Green Team is organizing its own initiatives. Employees are launching projects. Conversations emerge spontaneously, for example about the sustainability of coffee or energy consumption in IT systems.<\/div><div class=\"paragraph-in-scc-markdown-text ___1ngh792 ftgm304 f1iaxwol\"><br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s alive,\u201d says Sandra, \u201ceven if it\u2019s not always visible.\u201d Jeroen sees this often. \u201cYou set something in motion, and then much more happens than you anticipated. And it is precisely the CFO who is used to making that value visible and open for discussion. \u201cYou make things tangible, and that helps. Sustainability often feels vast and abstract, but you need to make it concrete.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #484f56; font-size: 1.125rem;\">That does not mean it is easy. You\u2019re probably not the only one. But someone has to take the first step. The Green Team at EDSN began with a single call to action on the intranet. \u201cThere\u2019s always someone in the organization who feels connected to this,\u201d says Sandra. <br \/><br \/>\u201cThat\u2019s how you gradually build something.\u201d Change doesn\u2019t have to start big. Sometimes it begins with a conversation. Sometimes with a small initiative.
