Mark Knijnenburg, Marjolein ten Haaft, and Anouk Roosenschoon made the switch from a large firm to nlmtd. It is one of the defining characteristics of the consulting profession. In 2018, Pieter Paul, Korik, Tom, and Mike decided it was high time to not only do this for clients but also to shake up the consulting industry itself. They came up with a completely new vision of what a consulting firm could be: nlmtd was born.   <\/p><p>Eight years later, it\u2019s clear they were on the right track: nlmtd now has nearly 160 consultants working out of Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Among them are Mark Knijnenburg, Marjolein ten Haaft, and Anouk Roosenschoon. After starting their careers at a large consulting firm, they decided to take the next step in their careers at nlmtd.  <\/p><p>\u201cnlmtd is a consulting firm for entrepreneurs who want to do impact-driven consulting work,\u201d Mark explains. \u201cWe work as independent contractors, but together we form a single team. That way, you combine the freedom of self-employment with the strength and connection of a real firm.\u201d <\/p><p>In a nutshell, this is nlmtd\u2019s unique business model. But how does it actually play out in the day-to-day work of its affiliated consultants? We\u2019ll walk through the three key ingredients of the formula\u2014freedom, unity, and impact\u2014with Mark, Marjolein, and Anouk.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad8fee3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ad8fee3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Freedom, Responsibility, and Trust<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dbcfda3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dbcfda3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First, there\u2019s entrepreneurship. This comes with a great deal of freedom. \u201cYou decide for yourself how many hours you work, where, when, and at what rate,\u201d says Mark.  <\/p><p>\u201cnlmtd focuses on carrying out impactful projects, regardless of how small or large the client is,\u201d Marjolein explains. \u201cI decide for myself where I want to add value. For example, I just helped <a href=\"https:\/\/nlmtd.com\/en\/inspiration\/municipal-heat-company-energy-transition-eindhoven\/\">set up an entirely new heating company<\/a>. How often do you get the chance to do something like that at a large consulting firm?\u201d   <\/p><p>\u201cBecause we take an entrepreneurial approach as consultants, you end up working in a more pragmatic way,\u201d Mark adds: \u201cFewer status meetings and more direct impact.\u201d<\/p><p>Freedom goes hand in hand with responsibility. \u201cOnce you make a commitment, you have to follow through on it, of course,\u201d Mark says. \u201cBut you\u2019re responsible for the quality of your own work, and there\u2019s no partner overseeing the project.\u201d  <\/p><p>\u201cWe operate on the basis of trust,\u201d Marjolein adds. \u201cQuality control is primarily focused on the front end\u2014specifically, the thorough application process, which assesses whether you\u2019re a good fit for nlmtd\u2019s business model and culture.\u201d <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2df9996 elementor-widget data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That also means that experienced professionals in particular can start out as freelancers at nlmtd. But that doesn\u2019t mean there isn\u2019t a place at the agency for other interested individuals or young professionals: nlmtd also offers the option of becoming a salaried employee. Anouk took advantage of this opportunity.  <\/p><p>\u201cI didn\u2019t feel experienced enough to start my own business just yet,\u201d she explains, \u201cbut now I can get a sense of it by observing others: What\u2019s involved? What are the benefits and risks? And yet I now experience much more freedom and trust. For example, within projects, I\u2019m given plenty of leeway to take responsibility on my own. Before, that was more strictly defined.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18122c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"18122c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">One close-knit group<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a804c20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a804c20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The second ingredient in the nlmtd formula is unity. \u201cI may be self-employed, but I\u2019m not alone,\u201d says Marjolein. \u201cThat\u2019s incredibly valuable to me. We\u2019re a close-knit group\u2014really fun to be around and great when you want to bounce ideas off an experienced colleague about an assignment. No matter what the topic is, there\u2019s always someone who knows everything about it.\u201d  <\/p><p>\u201cAnd despite the differences in seniority, there\u2019s no hierarchy,\u201d she adds. \u201cThat surprised me when I started. We do have titles, but they\u2019re more for showing the outside world how much experience someone has.\u201d <\/p><p>At the same time, nlmtd is indeed a genuine consulting firm. \u201cWith a permanent office and opportunities for training, coaching, marketing, business development, and so on,\u201d Anouk sums up. \u201cThanks to the strong reputation we\u2019ve built, you can also take on larger, more impactful projects than you could as a freelancer.\u201d  <\/p><p>All of these services (and more) are funded by the 20% of the hourly wage that all self-employed professionals pay to nlmtd. In addition, 12% goes to the person who secured your assignment. \u201cIt\u2019s a very fair and transparent distribution of value,\u201d says Marjolein.  <\/p><p>The separate sales commission encourages consultants to actively seek out new projects. \u201cSales is an essential and challenging part of consulting, but learning how to do it well often remains somewhat implicit within traditional firms,\u201d Mark notes. \u201cHere, you\u2019re much more encouraged to reach out and try it yourself, with the support of our senior colleagues\u2019 vast network.\u201d  <\/p><p>It fits with the emphasis on entrepreneurship. In line with this, the entire team is also working together to build nlmtd. \u201cHere, you\u2019re very closely involved in the strategic decisions that are made and can actively contribute to the direction of the company,\u201d Anouk explains. \u201cnlmtd is driven entirely by its consultants.\u201d   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8499780 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8499780\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Better World<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-611cc91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"611cc91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The third and final ingredient of the formula is impact: working at nlmtd means helping to build a future-proof economy by contributing to the major transitions of our time.<\/p><p>\u201cOur goal is for at least 80% of our projects to have a net positive impact,\u201d Mark explains. \u201cFor every project, we conduct an impact assessment: to what extent does the client contribute to a better world, and what is the impact of the project itself?\u201d <\/p><p>Mark, Marjolein, and Anouk, for their part, focus primarily on the energy transition. For example, Mark recently completed a major project for a grid operator that is working hard to upgrade the power grid. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2aaf6cc e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2aaf6cc\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8ba58cc elementor-view-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon\" data-id=\"8ba58cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-icon\">\n\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-quote-left\"><\/i>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05c560c elementor-blockquote--skin-clean elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"05c560c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\tEnsuring that we, as a society, can move forward is a very important motivation for me\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">- Anouk Roosenschoon<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d7255e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d7255e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve developed a methodology that allows us to determine, based on raw data, which parts of the low-voltage grid need to be addressed, when that should happen, how it should be done, and which implementation chain is best suited for the task,\u201d he explains. \u201cThey are now using this methodology to proactively address grid congestion, one of the major challenges we face today.\u201d <\/p><p>\u201cThat\u2019s what appeals to me so much about this sector,\u201d Anouk adds: \u201cYou\u2019re directly helping to keep society running. If the grid reaches its limits, new homes can no longer be connected, businesses can no longer grow, and the transition to sustainability slows down. Ensuring that we, as a society, can move forward is a very important motivator for me.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c80025d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c80025d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Doing Business Together to Make a Difference<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ced64f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ced64f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Together with the other ingredients, this mission forms the formula that makes nlmtd unique: doing business together to make an impact.<\/p><p>\u201cThis is another thing we have in common,\u201d says Marjolein: \u201cWe\u2019re all energetic, intrinsically motivated people who want to do meaningful work.
