There was no immediate network congestion, no financial incentive, and no operational crisis. What there was: a growing awareness that the status quo was unsustainable if Schiphol wanted to achieve its sustainability goals.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Electrification &#8211; including on the Airside &#8211; was increasing, sustainable ambitions were becoming more concrete, and initiatives within the organisation were multiplying. However, mutual coherence needed improvement. Energy was regarded as a sustainability issue, but at the time not yet as an explicit precondition for operations. This made the situation vulnerable.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Together with nlmtd, the Acceleration Team Energy (ATE) was therefore established. Not as a new department, but as a platform that steers energy transition initiatives to drive acceleration.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-08f64e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"08f64e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Many good initiatives, but no overview<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fcd0a8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fcd0a8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">A great deal was already happening within Schiphol in the areas of energy and sustainability. But almost everything originated from silos &#8211; logically organised, well-intentioned, but lacking an integral perspective.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The urgency was difficult to feel. Grid congestion did not become a factor until later. Cost was not an explicit driver. On top of that, an extensive programme was already in place to expand the existing network, which resolved problems in the short term. As a result, the urgency for energy direction was hard to quantify and communicate.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Yet the ATE held a clear conviction: without direction, Schiphol will inevitably run aground. The ATE had no formal decision-making authority or budget control only a substantive narrative. Sometimes it meant seizing momentum. For example, when grid congestion became a concrete reality and projects could no longer secure additional power.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Gradually, the conversation shifted. The ATE consistently positioned energy as a critical asset for Schiphol&#8217;s operations, not merely as a sustainability ambition. The ATE pinpointed gaps in projects and investments across these elements, and pushed the organisation, within existing structures, to launch targeted initiatives.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Why it works within a complex organisation<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The ATE operates in an advisory capacity, not in the seat of project development, and not within existing governance lines. This is precisely what enables it to help prepare decisions more effectively.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Infrastructure, Commercial, and Sustainability (SUS) are increasingly finding common ground on energy issues. Not because they are formally required to, but because it is substantively necessary to resolve congestion. That is perhaps the most significant shift.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>What other organisations can learn from this<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Don&#8217;t wait until urgency becomes undeniable.<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Connect to existing structures rather than reorganising everything.<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Start small and demonstrate that progress is possible.<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Build coalitions of people with the right mindset.<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Don&#8217;t focus immediately on new assets \u2014 first focus on working effectively and managing what is already there (with an emphasis on organisation and data).<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The biggest pitfall is continuing to think in terms of projects. A project can succeed while the transition stalls.
