Not to dictate policy, but to make the voice of the future audible.   <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 15, we welcomed over 40 pre-university students from Huygens College to our office in Amsterdam for a day of learning, action and impact. In interactive sessions, they talked about themes that directly affect them &#8211; think climate, housing and safety &#8211; and worked out ideas with an approach that gives everyone&#8217;s voice space. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-640c81b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"640c81b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A day full of energy<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dff8c75 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dff8c75\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together with the youth, we literally and figuratively dove into the future of the Netherlands. The day consisted of two parts: a creative workshop and an afternoon of plastic fishing on the Amsterdam Canals with Plastic Whale.   <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the workshop we used the 1-2-4-All methodology: first forming individual ideas, then working in pairs, foursomes, and finally coming up with one proposal as a group. We did this per theme: the 42 students worked in six groups and came up with a total of six concrete ideas about the future of the Netherlands. We deliberately kept the questions open, without guidance, so that the first direction really came from the students themselves.    <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central questions were: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the Netherlands of the future look like? <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What concerns do you have about the future? <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the biggest challenges for your generation?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then students chose their top three priorities from ten topics:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. World &amp; security<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Climate &amp; sustainability<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Housing &amp; affordability<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students then came up with not only keen observations, but also concrete solutions: from more focus on mental safety and neighborhood initiatives to creative ideas on circular energy, greening and affordable housing.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e71a9a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e71a9a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">This stood out<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32c4c81 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32c4c81\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversations were open and remarkably mature about the world they are growing up in. Security was top of mind: not only around war and geopolitics, but also close to home, such as the safety of women in public. Moreover, the climate is still very much alive. Many students appeared knowledgeable about topics such as energy storage, grid capacity and greening. Finally, housing symbolized a broader sense of insecurity:      <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Will there still be room for me later?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Words speak volumes. In the wordclouds below you can see terms that came up a lot such as safe, green, cozy, fair and affordable. Words that together paint a clear picture of what this generation wants: a future that is both sustainable and livable.  <\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that these results come from one group (one school, one curriculum) and are therefore not representative of all young people. Actively involve their voices in choices that shape the future.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter invites politicians to discuss the three priorities above. The involvement and curiosity of these young people show how valuable their perspective is.
